Hi y’all,

You know, I often talk about seasons here; about living in the moment, accepting what is and trying to find whatever good things a month may hold. It’s no secret I love the sultry heat of summer in the South, and I’ve written plenty about fall and winter too. But spring… well spring is a bit of a rascal. Sometimes she is lovely; a graceful, gradual dance to summer. But other times she is fickle, wavering between the beautiful and the savage. This year though? This year I happily kicked March right on out the door while giving April my best, “come at me, I just dare you” stare. To be fair the weather only played a small part in that; the month was just a doozy. It was the kind of month that makes me incredibly glad for fresh starts.

If you read last month’s letter then you may remember that February hadn’t exactly been stellar either. And though I did talk about it a little in my newsletter, I found myself trying to end on a bit of a positive note. But I regretted that as soon as I sent it. Not because what I said wasn't true, but because it didn't feel true to where I was in that moment. I try my best to make this part of the newsletter a snapshot of exactly where I am right now. And not that looking for a bright side is a bad thing necessarily. But neither is sitting in the darkness. Sometimes, we need the darkness. (If you explore through everything down below, you might even stumble across some words I wrote on the subject.)

So if you happen to find yourself sitting in the dark at times this month, I say that’s ok. The days will get longer on their own; the light always eventually finds a way in, whether you look for it or not.

Without the bandwidth or available brain space to contemplate what I was actually in the mood for I spent most of March listening to whatever Spotify put in front of me. (Thank goodness it knows me so well!) But today I’ve had Helado Negro’s Far In on repeat, and it’s hitting all the right feels for ushering in a month more chill than the last.

READING IN

A couple of months ago I learned about a book called, Screaming on the Inside: The Unsustainability of American Motherhood by Jessica Grose. I immediately put it on hold at the library, but it wasn't until two days after writing my own reflections on motherhood that it became available. I picked it up and read it in about ten days, which might actually be a record for me. It’s an excellent book; an incredibly accurate and comprehensive telling of the experience of motherhood, and it ought to be required reading for every single human.

THINKING ABOUT

Though I’ve had a lot on my mind this month, I find I’m coming up empty for something to include in this space. But it got me thinking, I wonder what you all have been thinking about? So tell me, what’s on your mind lately? I’d love to hear!

CRUSHING ON

My delving into the world of cyanotype led me to the website of British photographer Jo Stephen; her cyanotype resources have been invaluable, but as I explored her other photographic work I became completely enthralled. She has a beautiful aesthetic, and her site is well worth taking a few moments to check out.
