Hi y’all,

It’s been a dreary, rainy day here, which is, next to sunny and 78 degrees, my favorite kind; perfect for writing all of you, my favorite album playing quietly on the record player and a warm drink within reach. I’m choosing to ignore the mess on my desk which currently includes a palette of watercolor paints, a couple of stacks of books, some origami boxes, and the bones of a small animal. Homeschooling is so weird.

Despite being one day longer than it is most years, February somehow flew by. As usual it was a mixed bag, but ended on a high note - a quick trip south that seemed to do us all a world of good. The weather was a little cool but mostly gorgeous, so we spent most of the time in whatever outdoor spaces we could find, hiking around cemeteries and enjoying the beach. There was also a lot of really good food which in my book makes just about any trip worthwhile.

I took a fair amount of pictures this month (travel is oh-so-good for inspiration) and wrote a short entry on the new page. But otherwise it’s been a quiet month; head down and just keep going.

I’m so glad that all of you are here. This newsletter really is one of my very favorite things that I do. Even on the hardest days of the hardest months I’ve looked forward to sitting down and putting these together. As always, I love to hear from you, too, so don’t hesitate to write me back.

INTERTWINED

These days my instagram account exists pretty much for the sole purpose of swapping funny memes and videos with my sister. Occasionally though I’ll end up passing a few minutes by scrolling through and stumble across something I truly love, such as this video about how we become intertwined with others, the text of which I thought was too good not to share.

There’s a quote by an Argentine author that I think about a lot that reads: “I’m not sure that I exist actually. I am all the writers that I have read, all the people that I have met, all the women that I’ve loved, all the cities I have visited.”

I will always make my toast with olive oil because that’s how my dad makes his. I will always make salad dressing with oil and vinegar because that’s how mom makes hers. My boots are a certain color because my best friend had that color first and I liked how they looked. My Spotify has crossfade on because years ago my friend took my phone and turned it on for me. I will always tie my shoelaces behind the tongue because that’s how my friend did it with his shoes in middle school, and I thought it looked cool.

How beautiful it is that even those people we have not spoken to for years now we carry with us unknowingly in the way we cook our food, or the music that we listen to. That our individuality is not only created but curated is a beautiful acknowledgment of our fondness for others. To like something enough of another person that we make it a piece of ourselves is an almost indescribably beautiful tribute.

A GOOD DAY

I firmly believe that the good moments are worth marking, noting, remembering, holding onto in whatever way we can. This one came on a warm February day on the Georgia coast. Except for my cold toes, I could have stood there forever.

LISTENING TO

This month I’ve been listening off and on to Jamie Drake’s record, New Girl. If I’m honest I don’t love every single song, but overall it’s a solid album that’s very easy to listen to. A couple of her songs have even found their way onto my sunday mornings playlist which I’ve been absolutely wearing out lately (maybe it’s the Deep South brunch vibes I’m still digging).

READING IN

It’s been a dry book month this month; mostly I’ve been finishing up the last straggling pages of a few books I had almost-but-not-quite finished. But I do have Remarkably Bright Creatures next up in the queue, and I’m looking forward to starting it.

CRUSHING ON

If you only check out one thing from my newsletter this month, it should be Jack Lowe’s The Lifeboat Station Project. The short video at the link is something I suspect I will revisit many times over, and I can promise is well worth your time.

THINKING ABOUT

Earlier this month I came across this beautiful article titled, How to Spend Your Time Poorly and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. It articulates something I’ve felt deeply for a very long time.
