A few months ago a friend of mine introduced me to the concept of a digital garden. If you aren’t familiar with the idea it is, in short, a digital space for planting and tending to ideas. More of a way to designate space for the ideas and projects still being cultivated, rather than the finished product of a blog. This thought completely captivated me. When I decided to lessen my time on Instagram and focus more on putting my work on my blog, part of the reason was that I felt Instagram kept me too hemmed into a certain aesthetic. Most of those following me there had done so because of the nature photos, and while that is the bulk of what I shoot it isn't the only thing I shoot. And while it’s not like there are any rules, I still felt like posting anything outside of the usual was taboo. So I moved to focusing my work here instead, where I could feel a bit freer to post photos of abandoned spaces or window reflections or water parks. But even on my blog I often find that I feel the need for my thoughts and ideas to be in a fairly complete state when I share them. Many times I’ll have an idea for a blog, or a set of photos I want to do something with, but I’m unable to flesh anything out before I get pulled in another direction.
So the idea of a digital in-flux space to grow my ideas - a constant work in progress, a place for fledgling ideas to take root and grow into something a little more - sounded like a good idea. But if you know anything at all about me, you know that, while a love a good garden, I’m a total sucker for an open meadow. A place with a lot of sky to think under. A place where things are a bit wilder and more unpredictable. Tended more by the forces of nature than by any human. And that tends to be the way I operate anyway. The things I get inspired by or spend my time pondering over tend to find their way to me, rather than me seeking them out. So a meadow sounds a little more, “me.”
So here we are. My digital meadow. Feel free to walk the trails, explore what’s around. You’ll see some of it is grouped by category, some will seem a little random, and no doubt the format and layout will change over time. That’s sort of the point. The idea is that this will be a space in flux, often changing and hopefully growing. Perhaps the occasional cross pollination of two ideas that needed to find each other. And who knows. Maybe something beautiful will bloom.
