About
Kate Guy is a photographer whose work explores the beauty and difficulty of life, set against the backdrop of the American South. Her work often features nature and the landscape as she contemplates ideas around spirituality, identity, human relationship, and the complexity of motherhood. She has recently shifted to working primarily in 35mm and medium format film, embracing the messiness and imperfections often inherent in the medium as a mirror to her work’s expression. Her work has been featured at The Curated Fridge, The Luupe, and in juried shows in Georgia and Virginia. She currently lives in Athens, Georgia.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Photography is the way in which I work to better understand both myself and the world around me. I often pick up the camera because I see something so beautiful I want to capture it, or so broken I want to fix it, but I am most inspired by that which holds the tension between the two. My creative practice centers around an exploration of what it means to be human in an increasingly difficult and disconnected world. My images reflect on motherhood, spirituality and connection to nature, and living in and loving a land that holds a complicated history. My intention is to create work that both sparks recognition and invites the viewer to look inward.
