HIRAETH

(n.) a longing for a home or place to which you cannot return, or a home which maybe never was; the nostalgia, the yearning, the grief for the lost places of your past; the ache for the unique blend of place, time, and people that can never be recreated; a pull on the heart that conveys a distinct feeling of missing something irretrievably lost.

I’ve thought much over the last two years or so about the concepts of place and home. Since moving back to Georgia I’ve realized just how important place has been to me; something that I have always sensed deeply but never fully understood, or fully embraced, until coming back. While I easily disconnect from objects I often develop strong ties to places, and I believe these places have shaped me just as much as the people in my life have.

Now I would like to explore this idea through photography, with others. I am embarking on a project - a portrait series - of people in the places that matter most to them; the places that have made a difference in their life.

To find out more, or to participate, please read up on the details and send me a note using the form below.

I’m currently looking for people to participate in this project as portrait subjects. The idea is to create portraits of people in locations that are important to them. I would like to include people representing various age groups, ethnicities, backgrounds, etc. I will begin the project focused on locations in Georgia, however if you are interested in participating with a location outside the state (particularly locations in the Southeast) please still go ahead and submit the form, as I may expand the project if/as logistics allow.

If selected to participate you will be photographed at a location you have chosen as meaningful to you. Examples of locations could be your current home or property; a childhood home, school, church, or other significant building; a meaningful location to a consequential relationship (the place of a birth, marriage, or loss); or simply a favorite spot, somewhere you go to find your own thoughts and reconnect with yourself. Locations could also be where something previously stood, for example an old building that has been converted to something else, or the street or place where a building once stood but has since been torn down. Ultimately it can be any place, as long as it is a place to which you feel deeply connected.

There will be no monetary compensation, however all participants will receive digital copies of the images created during their session.
