Well, today’s the day! Sort of, anyway. As many of you who have been following along know, today is the official last day of my photo a day project. (To see how the project came about you can check out the backstory here.)
But, I gave myself a birthday present. Turns out that 90 days is a long time to do a daily photo project. And 90 photos is a LOT of photos. Somewhere between the day after my birthday, and three days later when my motivation for this project completely flew the coup only to be seen once, briefly, again, I decided that my gift to myself this year would be calling it at day 81. Since 2020 has been the year of absolutely nothing going to plan, it seemed appropriate. I figure 81 is still a lot of photos, and besides, look how neatly they fit into my nice little 9 x 9 grid below! 😁 (On a computer or tablet they show 9x9; on a phone they show up 40 x 2, +1, which is the universe’s way of saying that photos should be viewed on a screen larger than 2.5 x 4 inches.)
Even with it not quite going exactly to plan, I really, really enjoyed this project. And I’m actually incredibly happy with the way it turned out. Every single image has a story. And I learned a lot.
I learned that even when you think there’s nothing to photograph, there’s something to photograph. And when there isn't something to photograph, you make something to photograph. I learned to be a bit more impulsive and in the moment. I learned to make the picture that you think isn’t going to work. I learned that not every photo can be a winner. And that’s ok. Even the non-winners can help to tell the story. But most importantly I learned that sometimes you just have to let go of perfection, and open yourself up to the possibility that if you do, you may find something even better.
